Report:
Well what a difference a week can make! The fortnight of rain and cool weather has really sparked the fishing back into life. The rod average has jumped to an excellent 5.72 this week. Most of the fish have been taken down 10 -15 feet below the surface although if the conditions are right CDC’s have been working on the surface. Black or Black and green lures and Orange blobs have been the most successful patterns this week, with the most popular area’s being the Dam wall and Buoy 5 although most areas have seen action this week. The weather has improved slightly with fewer showers and plenty of cloud cover and light winds mainly from the South.
Max Peacock landed this week’s best rainbow a cracking fish of 5lb 4oz. This superb trout fell to a black and green lure which was retrieved with steady pulls just a bit quicker than the drift and fished on an intermediate line. Max and his boat partner were taking long drifts across the main basin from the sailing club isl towards Upperfields Bay and Fishtail Creek and it was out across the middle where they found most of their fish.
The best brown the week was a stunning resident brown that had grown to reach 4lb in weight. This beautiful fully finned fish fell to Mr E Clements. Mr Clements was fishing a weighted Caddis Fly Nmph on a long leader on a floating line and was using a slow figure 8 retreive when this big grown on fish sucked up his fly. Mr Clements was drifting onto the front edge of North Island, this was where he took all his fish on the day.
Top spots for the boats this week were Dam Wall, Buoy 4, Buoy 5, North Island and the Main Basin.
Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay
The best flies were Black & green lures, Orange Blob, Boobies, Minkies, Hoppers, Damsels, CDC’s and Bumbles.
Tight lines for 2009
