Report:
It has been another hot week with plenty of blue skies and sunshine. While this is lovely weather in general it is not ideal for fishing! Never the less with a rod average of 3.51 the fishing has been pretty good given the conditions. Nymphs and dries have still been catching plenty of fish but also small fry patterns and other mini lures are starting to catch well as the trout cotton on to the pin fry in the water now. The trout are definitely sitting deeper in the water during the heat of the day and so fishing slow and allowing your flies to sink down is a good tip. The big weed beds that are forming now will harbour thousands upon thousands of these tiny fish and targeting them with small fry patterns should find a trout or two. The daphnia has also started and fishing out across open water and the deeper water by the dam wall is starting to produce a good number of trout.
Best Rainbow this week goes to A. Cartwright who landed a cracking trout of 5lb 8oz. Mr Cartwright caught this excellent fish on a gold head damsel fished on a sink tip line. Mr Cartwright was fishing out from the dam wall and allowing his gold head to sink for a good while before he started his retrieve. Using the sink tip line just helped to keep his flies that little bit deeper as he brought them back towards himself. This tactic accounted for his prize rainbow as well as 3 other rainbows and a brown trout.
The Best Brown this week goes to regular angler Brian Nadin. Brian tempted his big 5lb resident brown using a team of small nymphs on an intermediate line. Brian was fishing in Upperfields Bay working the water from Buoy 6 right into the weed beds, using a very slow figure eight retrieve to keep his flies well down. This method accounted for more than a dozen fish over the course of the day for Brian, including a nice rainbow of 3lb 8oz.
Top spots for the boats this week were Brown Ale Bay, Middle Wood, Upperfields Bay, Main Basin, Shinningford Creek, Fishtail Creek and the Dam Wall.
Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay
The best flies were Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, Invicta, Klinkhammers, Black Hoppers, Hares Ears and mini lures.
