Report:
This has been one of the most difficult weeks this season. The weather has been mainly hot and bright with some strong winds as well. This has combined to make the fish finicky. Whilst buzzers and nymphs have been the top method once again, wet flies such as invicta and viva’s have also worked well this week. The fish have also started to move out over open water with many fish being caught out across the main basin this week. The weed beds have also started to grow in earnest, so look out for these and work the edges of them for trout that will be feeding in amongst the weed.
Best Rainbow this week goes to Chad Critchly. Chad is a recent convert from carp fishing and after this excellent trout, which weighed in for 6lb 12oz, I think he’ll be back again! Chad was working Tower Bank from his boat about 70-80yds off shore. He was fishing a floating line with a single damsel on the point and just bringing it back in series of slow pulls when his prize fish walloped the damsel and took off, taking line from the reel as it went! It was several rod bending minutes later that, with a sense of relief Chad was able to get the net under the trout and bring it safely aboard.
Regular angler Mike Curtis landed this week’s best brown. This was another superb resident fish which topped the scales at a huge 5lb 10oz. Mike was also fishing from a boat and was fishing in Shinningford Creek when he hooked into this stunning brown trout. Mike was fishing dries in the ripple when the water opened up beneath his little black beetle and his fly disappeared. As Mike was using light line for his dries he had a long and careful fight with his big brown before he was able to get the better of it and bring it to the net and into the boat!
Top spots for the boats this week were Tower Bank, Middle Wood, Millfields Bay, Main Basin, Shinningford Creek and Fishtail Creek.
Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay
The best flies were Buzzers, Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, Invicta, Viva, Loynton Guinea and Hares Ears.
Tight lines for 2009
