Mike Laycock with his huge resident 6lb 4oz Brown Trout
Report:
The conditions have been reasonable this week if a little bright especially in the latter half of the week. The Weekend in particular was very bright with hardly a cloud in the sky. The wind has been light and predominately from the West. Despite the blazing sun the fish have not gone deep with floating lines still doing most of the damage although Intermediate lines worked well over the weekend. Nymphs and buzzers have been the best methods again this week with dries still accounting for a few fish either early on or late in the day when the sun is not so fierce and there is some cloud around.
The first of the pin fry can been seen in the water around the Jetty now so flies like cormorants, small pearly nymphs or skinny dabblers will be flies to use over the next part of the season. Also there are a few small long horn sedges hatching now so small bushy brown dries or bob flies and hares ear’s will all be good for imitating the various stages of the sedge.
Mike Laycock captured the best Brown this week, although not quite a fishery record it is certainly the largest brown to come out of Carsington for a few years! This superb resident Brownie tipped the scales at a whopping 6lb 4oz! Mike was fishing on the drift in Sheepwash bay using a team of small nymphs on a floating line with a small olive nymph on the point. It was this olive nymph that the brownie swallowed up! Once on, the trout bent Mike’s rod double as it took off and gave battle. After a long typical head down, deep fight this magnificent resident trout eventually succumbed to the net.
Mike Laycock also makes the Honours board for the biggest rainbow this week weighing one in for 4lb 12oz. This fish also fell to the same small olive nymph in Sheepwash bay. Mike shares the honours for best rainbow bith regular anglers Brian Nadin and Phil Harding who both landed rainbow’s of 4lb 12oz. Both anglers caught their big rainbows on black buzzers fished on floating lines. Brian caught his from Upperfields Bay, while Phil Harding took his from the back of Stones Island.
Top spots for the boats this week were Sheepwash Bay, Upperfields Bay, Millfields Bay, Stones Island, Sailing Club Island and Fishtail Creek.
Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay
The best flies were Buzzers, Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, olive nymphs, Hoppers, Cormorants and Hares Ears.
Tight lines for 2009
