Report:
The summery weather continued from last week into this week…. Well at least as far as the weekend. Then March returned bringing stiff NE winds, cool temperatures and lots of rain! Despite this the reservoir still fished well. Early in the week when the conditions were right the fish were up and feeding well. Sub surface nymphs worked well as did dries with several anglers catching good numbers of fish on dries such as black hoppers, daddies and CDC’s. Buzzers are still catching well too in the shallow areas such as Sheepwash bay and Millfileds.
Brian Goldstraw is the captor of this week’s best rainbow. A stunning fish of 8lb 9oz. Brian caught his monster fish whilst fishing off the edge of Flat Island (the small one in front of North Island). He was using diawl bach’s on a floating line and bringing them in with a slow retrieve when there was a solid bang and the fish tried to take his rod out of his hands. Once on, the trout really gave Brian the run around using its weight to dive deep and pile the pressure on. It was some good time before Brian was able to bring the trout to the surface and get its head up and slip the net under it with a great sense of relief! It was the best of 12 fish for Brian on the day. This was Brian’s first visit to Carsington Water and one I am sure he’ll remember for a long time!
Best Brown of the week goes to M. Margett who landed a beautiful grown on brown of 3lb 2oz. This cracking fish took a Pheasant Tail Nymph fished on a floating line from a boat in Millfields Bay. Mr Margett also caught 3 nice rainbows the best of which was 2lb 4oz. These came from a variety of places around the reservoir.
Top spots for the boats this week were Sheepwash Bay, Tower Bank, Upperfields Bay, Millfields Bay and
Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay
The best flies were Buzzers, Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, Hoppers, Daddies, CDC’s, Cormorants, PTN and orange blobs.
Tight lines for 2009
