Report:

Well it looks like the summer has arrived. Lots of sunshine and blue skies is what we have had the most of this week! The wind has been variable in both direction and strength. Having started with light winds from the SE it then swung to the W and the next day it was from the E! and by the weekend it was all the way round the NE.  Buzzers and Nypmhs like damsel’s or Diawl Bach or PTN’s have remained the prominent method all be it fished a little deeper in all this sunshine. Intermediates and sink tip lines have been favoured this week over the full floater. There have also a few fish starting to rise further out in calm conditions so it may be worth trying further and further  out from the bank if this hot weather continues.

Our very own ranger Mike Hurst has the honours for the best rainbow caught this week! Mike caught his excellent 6lb 6oz rainbow from a boat off Half moon field. Mike was approx. 35yds off the bank using a hothead damsel on a floating line. Mike was casting out and counting the fly down for 10 seconds before starting a slow retrieve with an occasional jerk. As Mike started his retrieve he felt a gentle take and then as he lifted the rod into the fish it became a vicious take as the fish tore off through the water. Mike knew it was a good fish when it came to the surface for the first time and he could see the wide shoulder break the surface as the fish turned for another run. It was several rod bending minutes before mike was able to get his net under the fish. Getting the fish in the net was complicated slightly by Mike still having his net folded up in the bottom of the boat! and so had to get it unfolded and under the fish as he was trying to play the fish at the same time! So Mikes tip to everyone is… always have your net ready, just incase!

Peter Pattinson took the best brown of the week. Peter’s fish was a fully finned grown on resident trout of 4lb. This stunning fish took a cruncher nymph fished on a midge tip line whilst drifting across Fishtail Creek. Peter was just using a steady figure 8 retrieve when his cruncher was snaffled and he was in. The brownie, in typical fashion, headed straight down for the deep water in Fishtail. With its head down it kept a deep bend in Peter’s rod for a long time before Peter eventually gained the upper hand and was able to bring his prize to the net.

Top spots for the boats this week were Millfields Bay, Brown Ale Bay, Half Moon Field, Fishtail Creek, and Sheepwash Bay

Top spots from the bank were Millfields Point, Upperfields Bay and Simpsons Bay

The best flies were Buzzers, Diawl Bach’s, Damsels, Crunchers, Olive or Black lures, PTN and orange blobs.

Tight lines for 2009
