Report

Rain, Sun, Rain, Sun, Rain, Sun! That’s what it has been like this week! And we are definitely in to October; the fleeces have come out of hibernation and are an essential for those chill early mornings. The wind was in the west for the early part of the week before swinging to the NW by Friday. It then went 180 to SE for Sat then back to NW on Sun. It did get quite strong on Saturday reaching gusts of force 6 (25mph) but this did not seem to bother the fish unduly with a good rod average of 4.5 on the day. Tactics have definitely been fry imitations as the fish have started to move back towards the shallower area’s chasing the fry. The trout have not been deep with most people catching in the top 6-8 feet.

Ian Ritchie landed the best rainbow this week! A new fishery record! This stunning fully finned grown on resident rainbow weighed in at 7lb 2oz beating the old record by 6oz! Ian was drifting past number 2 buoy fishing two small black minkies about 8 feet apart on an intermediate line and just stroking them back when he hooked this monster. Ian said that at first it just felt solid and kept its head down and he wondered if he had hooked a big brown. Then the fish came to the surface and the fireworks started! The trout tore off and took Ian well into his backing; he had just about got all his backing back on the reel when it went off again tearing more backing from the reel. The trout did this a third time before Ian could get any fly line back on the reel and even then it was many more minutes before he had enough control to reach for the landing net and gently bring it over the lip of his net and bring it safely into the boat.

Congratulations to Ian on being the new holder of the fishery record rainbow trout!

Honours for the best brown were shared this week between Tony Wilton and Ian Gould. Both anglers landed cracking browns of 4lb 2oz. Both these beautiful grown on resident fish fell to Olive damsels. Tony was fishing his gold head damsel on a floating line in Millfields bay and was using a steady retrieve to bring his flies in. Ian was drifting across the mouth of Fishtail Creek using an un-weighted damsel on a sinking line and was fishing quite slow and deep.

Top spots for the week were the Buoy 5 & across the mouth Fishtail Creek, Millfields bay, Buoy 7, Buoy 2, the Dam and drifts across the middle from the boats and Millfields Point from the bank.

The best flies were Damsel, Minky, Dry Bibio, Cat’s Whiskers, Cormorant, Orange Blob, Black Buzzer, Diawl Bach and Humungus.

Tight lines for 2008
