Report
It has been a bit mixed weather wise this week. We have had bright sunshine some days, showers and light rain on others and the wind has come alternately from the North, the West and the South! The wind has not been too fierce gusting to a maximum of force 5 one day this week. Temperatures have been in the early teens for most of the week reaching highs of late teens at the weekend. The mixture of weather has not put the fish off with the rod average going up from last week to 3.20 this week. The fish have been well spread and well up in the water with floating lines and either fry patterns or nymphs accounting for many trout.
Pete Cowan took the best rainbow, a cracking resident fish of 5lb 2oz. This beauty fell to a Kate McLaren fished on a floating line as Pete drifted past Buoy 5 in the mouth of Fishtail Creek. Pete was fishing the washing line with a black booby on the point and the Kate Mclaren on the top and a black buzzer in-between. He was figure 8ing his flies back and slowly lifting them the last 5yds. It was as Pete was lifting his flies and the Kate McLaren was dragging on the surface that the water erupted and this big fish grabbed his fly and turned. Pete said he was very relieved when he got his line back and got the fish safely in the boat.
The Best Brown this week goes to Mr R.A. Smith. Mr Smith landed an absolute corker! a 4lb 8oz grown on resident trout with a huge tail, perfect fins and black spots all down the length of its dark brown and butter yellow body. Mr Smith was drifting off the dam wall and fishing on the dap with a black & ginger bumble when the water boiled up and broke to reveal a huge mouth swallowing the fly. The brown turned and was hooked, it then tore off for the depths taking line with it. It was many heart stopping minutes before Mr Smith was able to gain the upper hand and eventually bring his magnificent trout to the net.
Top spots for the week were the Buoy 5 & across the mouth Fishtail Creek, Millfields bay, Half Moon Field, Hall Wood and drifts across the middle from the boats and Millfields Point from the bank.
The best flies were Black Fritz, Damsel, Montana, Daddy Long Legs, Dry Bibio Viva, GRHE, Cat’s Whisker and Humungus.
Tight lines for 2008
