Report
In the immortal words of Victor Meldrew “I don’t belive it!” it hasn’t rained all week! It has actually been dry and warm and sunny! The temperatures rose to the dizzying heights of 19 degree’s at the weekend. The winds started the week from the South/ South West and were quite light only reaching force 3 with occasional gust of force 4. By Friday the wind had dropped away altogether and Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all flat calm with bright sunshine. This made the fishing tricky for the last half of the week. The best tactics were fry patterns fished on floating lines or intermediate lines and damsels and montana’s also fished on floaters or intermediates. There are still fish being taken off the top, with daddies, bibio and black hoppers all catching well.
Best rainbow this week is a belter! Gareth Jones landed a stunning 6lb 10oz trout using a black fritz on a floating line. Gareth was drifting across the mouth of Fishtail Creek when this monster came up and swallowed his fly. Once he struck, the fish tore off making use of the deep water to make several powerful runs before Gareth could gain the upper hand and bring it to the net. Weighing 6 fish in for 19lb 8oz, his 6lb 10oz rainbow was the best of 16 fish for the day for Gareth.
The top brown this week was a beautiful fully finned resident fish weighing in at 3lb 6oz. It was caught by Keith Stringer who tempted it with a damsel nymph fished on a sink tip with a figure 8 retrieve. Keith was nymphing as he drifted across Millfields Bay when this cracking brownie sucked in the damsel and tried to make for the weed beds near Millfields Island. Keith kept the pressure on and was able to turn the fish away from the weeds and bring it safely to the boat. The beautiful brownie was the best of a 6 fish bag that weighed in for just over 15lb.
Top spots for the week were the Buoy 5 & across the mouth Fishtail Creek, Millfields bay, Half Moon Field, Hall Wood and drifts across the middle from the boats and Millfields Point from the bank.
The best flies were Black Fritz, Damsel, Montana, Daddy Long Legs, Dry Bibio Viva, GRHE, Cat’s Whisker and Humungus.
