Report

The week started out as August should with warm days and light winds, but as the week went on the wind picked up and the rain came! The winds have been from the south/ southwest all week and the rain has help to cool things off a little and the fishing has picked up. The trout are still feeding hard on daphnia out across the open water where white lures on fast sink lines worked with a fast retrieve has been the best method. The other place the trout can be found is tight along the edges of the weed beds where they are picking off fry and snails. These fish have fallen mostly to diawl bach’s and montana’s fished on intermediate lines with a slow retrieve.

The Best Rainbow this week goes to Philip Coughlan who tempted a stunning 4lb trout using a green peter on his middle dropper as part of a traditional lochstyle wet fly team. Philip was drifting across the front of Sitch Plantation using an intermediate line and a steady retrieve when this belting trout came and snatched his fly. After tearing of several yards of line and giving Philip the run around for several minutes he was able to bring it under control and safely net it.

Brian Nadin takes the honours for the best brown this week. Brian was fishing along the edge of the weed beds in Millfileds Bay with team of diawl bach’s on an intermediate line. He using a very slow figure eight retrieve when his fin perfect brownie confidently took his point fly and simply swam off with it! The line just went tight and kept getting tighter as the brownie put his head down and powered off. This was the best of 3 browns for the day for Brian, all of which fell to slow fished diawl bach’s.

Top spots for the week were the Deep water across the main basin, Buoy 8 out from the Dam, Sitch Plantation, Millfields Bay from the boats and Millfields Point from the bank.

The best flies were White Lures, Gold Head Montana, Diawl Bach, Hares Ear, Soldier Palmer, Damsel, Boobies and Cats Whisker.

Tight lines for 2008
