Thornton weekly fishing report week ending 25/05/08
Another good week with a rod average 3.4 as 224 rods caught 764 trout. Anglers report plenty of trout moving on the surface but at times they proved more difficult to tempt this week. The reason could be the sheer number of food items on the water with the first of the damsels & sedge this week, large black buzzers & huge hatches of the smaller green buzzers, clouds of daphnia in the water & during the past couple of days we have seen the first of the pin fry, nature really has flung open the larder door as far as the trout are concerned. Our water clarity is excellent & its time to think more about your presentation, taper your leaders (if your not sure how, ask) finishing at a 5lb or better a 4lb point. Chris Birch & myself enjoyed an excellent last hour & a half fishing on the drift during one evening rise boating 11 trout & missing twice as many on olive & red hoppers, Ian Gedney fished the same evening from his tube & fished a size 16 shipmans to catch 11, Barry Nelson fished a morning session with buzzers & damsels to catch 20, while Clive Holt fished an evening session & an excellent rise to catch 17, Alan Dawes caught 18 on buzzers, while P. Harris & K. Maile caught 27 on buzzers & sparsely tied diwal bachs. During any bright spells in the weather an intermediate with damsel, orange blobs, Montana have worked well, however during overcast periods buzzer & especially the olive on a floating line has caught well. During any evening rise boats on the drift are catching best with suspender buzzers & hoppers. Our water temperature is 15 degrees perfect for fly fishing, with the excellent hatches its an ideal time to come & visit Thornton.
