Thornton Fishing report week ending 18/05/08
For the fourth week in a row we have recorded a catch of over 1,000 fish for the week an excellent period of fishing with last weeks rods catching 1,012 trout for a weekly rod average of 4.2
Our water clarity is excellent with visibility over 10ft which has certainly helped the fishing as have the large hatches of buzzers we are seeing at the moment with trout moving on the surface all day in any overcast conditions. We are also seeing a lot of daphnia in the water which is why an orange blob on an intermediate worked so well last week. Our hawthorn hedges are in full bloom I fully expect to see the hawthorn fly on the water this coming week.
Bank anglers are still catching, but please if you’re coming to fish the bank bring waders. The best time to fish the bank has been during the morning & late evening session as the trout are moving out into the deeper water during the brightest part of the day 11.30am – 4pm Boat anglers are catching trout all over the reservoir with boats on the drift during the evening rise enjoying excellent sport.
An intermediate line with orange blob, black buzzers, olive buzzers, hares ear & damsels have worked or a floating line with buzzers fished on the washing line, damsels, suspender buzzers & dries also taking fish.
William Davis held their corporate fishing day at Thornton and enjoyed an excellent days fishing with 16 rods catching 81 trout for a rod average of over 5.
Andy Downes fished the bank during an early evening session & caught 13 on damsels, Jason Bishop took a boat & fished in front of the wood & caught 14, Mike Griffiths fished along the farm bank with buzzers on a washing line & caught 20 trout, Mrs C. Bagshaw fished damsels & buzzer to catch 12 trout to 5lb, Tony Lorrimer caught 31 to 3lb8oz while T. Evans & J. Evans shared a boat & fished buzzers to catch 24, Mr F. Fenton, A. Scobie, C. Mackenzie & B. Allan traveled from Scotland for their visit & caught 47 trout between them on a black & green fitz & black buzzers.
With the water temperature at 16 degrees, good water clarity & excellent hatches it a perfect time to visit the reservoir. For the bird watchers amongst you keep a lookout for the hobby we have flying around the reservoir at the moment hunting the swallows & swift.
However for me one of the highlights of the week was the Battle of Britain Flight, Lancaster, Spitfire & Hurricane that flew down the reservoir on Saturday, a superb sight.
