Weekly results week ending - 25th April

137 anglers caught 718 fish rod average 5.2

A milder and generally more pleasant week with the loss of the north and east winds. Plenty of fish on or near the surface again with dries working very well at times. A few hawthorns starting to show but buzzers being the predominant life.

Olive, brown or olive Shipman's buzzers very good as well as the usual epoxy and slim tied buzzers in black or olive. Small olive lures worth a try if fish are a little deeper. Over the last few days evening sport has begun to liven up with lots of fish showing.

Quite a few fish 4Ib + again this week with the best at 7Ib 3oz to Mr.Martin caught fishing into the wind in the north east corner.

SCIERRA QUALIFIER

A cracking day on Thursday for the first SCIERRA qualifier of the season which was held at Toft. 12 boats and 24 anglers went afloat in an attempt to secure the three places that would qualify them for the final at Rutland Water in August.
The match started at 10 - just as the rain did ! Pete Cowan was the first to catch a fish - within the first 30 seconds !!

Sadly one pair bowed out after just an hour - it was their first time in a boat and you might say that they found it difficult to master. On leaving the boat, one of them stepped off the jetty in to 'thin air' and ended up in the pond - then his buddy broke his rod tip - just too much to take for them!

Boats were well spread across the fishery and most were in to fish almost immediately. The rain disappeared after around an hour and a few hours of dry but blustery conditions ensued with just one more shower in the early afternoon. The sun poked through at around 3pm and the fishing became a little more difficult after then but still odd fish were being picked up right to the final whistle at 6pm.

Jane Lidster (ex England Ladies International) and her boat partner Andy Hutson from the Lincolnshire Fly Shop, Waltham, Grimsby were the first to reach their 16 fish limit and therefore the first boat in at 2.04 pm. Several other boats were soon to follow and all secured healthy 2Ib per remaining hour time bonuses.

Results sheet is posted here http://www.toftnewton.com/images/scierra_results.jpg but in summary ......

22 completed the match and landed 142 fish with an average fish size of 1.67Ib's.

1. Jane Lidster & Andy Hutson 16 fish for 36Ib 14oz
2. Neil Deakin & Les Wardle 16 fish for 36Ib 4oz

3. Andy Clark & Mick Angell going to the final on the wildcard of best fish with a rainbow of 4Ib 8oz

Various methods worked well from floating lines and small Diawl Bachs down to DI 7 lines and fast pulling on lures, boobies & blobs.

Many thanks to all who took part and to Hywel Morgan/SCIERRA for considering Toft as a worthy venue for this now nationally recognised event.
