Report for Week ended Saturday 29th September:-

Rod Average 3.9

Largest Caught:-

21lb 12oz. Caught by Mr Andrew Roe from Coundon on a Black Zonker - 16lb 12oz. Caught by Mr Alan Proud from Redcar on a Black Cat's Whisker

10lb 5oz. Caught by Mr Phil Totten from Lanchester on a Black Vibrator Daddy

Fishing is now much improved as the conditions are cooling.

Norma and Len Donaghue both fished on Saturday on the lower lake. They

had a very successful day on an intermediate line and a Damsel, but

found the trout wouldn't touch the Damsel at all on a floater. They have

a very relaxed attitude to fishing - a coffee before beginning always

being essential - so they never got to venture as far as our top lake.

If they had though they would probably have found the trout turning

their nose up at the intermediate line. Les Burrup found the same -

Cat's Whisker on the lower lake and mainly CDC Emergers on the upper. Do

our trout know these lakes are only 20 yards apart and fed on the same

water supply?

For the last month or more they have been rising fairly steadily up

there and have been taking nicely on grey dry patterns and especially on

CDC buzzers.

Phil Totten winkled a double out (as usual!) He found the gold head,

black Vibrating Daddy worked on the lower lake and landed him his

double, but on the top lake the tiny Grayling Gnat was the answer. He

was fishing it just into the surface film, retreiving the pattern very

slowly using a floating line and 12 -15' leader. The secret up there

seems to be to get the fly just at the right depth - down into the

surface film but not under it.

Best patterns on the lower lake have been Cat's Whisker, Black Vibrating

Daddy, Black Zonker, White Nomad and the Gold Head Damsel - on

intermediate or floater (depending on the mood the trout have been in)!

On the top lake with trout still rising steadily the CDC Buzzers, Grey

Dry flies, Hare's Ear and sometimes, because there is never a hard &

fast rule - the ugly stuff such as Cats etc.
