Witton Castles Lakes fishery Report Week Ending 12 .8 07

Witton is fishing best when cloud is over the sun early mornings.

Water temperatures have risen dramatically over the last two weeks and weed cutting has been in process throughout all lakes. This activates the fish as nymphal life is in abundance amongst the weed.

Brian Kerr and Peter Jackson both from Morpeth fishing together on sporting permits, secured over 50 fish between them on indicators with red , green and black buzzers about 2 feet under the surface.

When the fish moved deeper, off came the indicators, and they carried on taking fish, best to 6 lbs on a Damsel nymph with a slow retrieve.

Best fish of the week fell to Christopher Johnston from Shildon at 16 ½ lbs on a black and green nomad.

J, Davidson  from Newton Aycliffe secured a superb 9 ½ lber completing his bag with a further 2, 2 lbers on a clan chief, along with Brian Conway from Crook with a 8 ½ lb goldie and a 2 lber on a gold ribbed hare’s ear.

RIVER WEAR.

Water temperatures until last week have been very cold indicating impounding reservoir water being released into the River Wear.

The river is a peat colour which is not normal and has not made the night fishing easy.

Over the last week temperatures have improved and night Seatrout catches have improved with Paul Immerson from Chilton taking a pair of superb Seatrout on Nicole’s Fancy, then returning a further 3 fish.

Stan Hunter from Binchester returned Seatrout throughout the week at 7lbs , 4lbs and  two 3 lbers, on a fly nicknamed “The Thief”.

This was basically because he stole the tying pattern from Gary Robinsons fly box.
