Witton Castle Fishery Report Week Ending 29.7.07
Rain has subsided for a while and we have bright but overclouded mornings.
Fish are on the move and chasing flies twitched across the surface.
Foam bodied Daddies, Sedgehogs, used as indicators with Black Buzzers suspended underneath are all taking fish in the range of 2lbs to 4 ½ lbs.
Martin Reed from Lancester, on a sporting permit, returned a superb 6 ½ lbs Goldie and then locked into a double over 20lbs, which gave him a merry dance for 20 minutes, coming to the net once then taking off again to be broken off in the process, on a Black Buzzer.
Flies have been CDC Daddies, Diawl Bachs, Sedgehogs and the Black Buzzer , which is constently catching fish, lures have been Black and Yellow Zonkers.
A group of anglers who linked up through a chat room www.troutandfly.co.uk visited Witton Castle with David Mcginnis, troutmasters, Grafham, with Linda Straghan who is an Irish ladies member , who are linked into this site operated by Ian Sanders All had a good day on sporting permits, with angler Rob Frame coming out best with 6 fish to 10 lbs plus.
Sporting permit anglers are averaging 3 to 4 fish per visit.
The river Wear has just started to settle back for night fishing and anglers will be out in force.
No real big seatrout have been reported taken, however fish in the 3lbs to 4lbs region have been returned.
My work collegue, one of the fishery managers at Witton Castle, who reports in the Northern Echo, which is a local paper, gave a report of a 23lbs Seatrout , which has been caught between Wolsingham and Stanhope.
They reckon it had been eaten, but they also have a photograph of it.
Bill reported that all the village of Wolsingham were at the party……
Nice one Bill.
