Last week at Llyn Brenig we opened for experts to come along and see what specimen pike they could lure out the depths of Llyn Brenig.
Monday was the most popular day of the week with all of the boats filled with anglers from all over the UK in search of the Brenig monster! The favoured areas were Sailing Club Bay, Duck Island and Brenig Arm, mostly due to these areas having weed beds and plenty of tree stumps for the pike to lie in ambush for passing trout and perch fry.
With fewer but larger pike caught this year, smaller pike may have been preyed on by their larger brethren and hopefully this will continue, resulting in a smallĀ stock of very big pike in a couple of years time. The best pike of the week was a massive 25lb 15oz caught by Mr Sheader, this pike was 1 of 4 over 20lb with Dave Kelbrick of Chester taking a 21lb 1oz pike on a Fox Replicant Perch Pattern.
We believe that Brenig will be producing thirty-pounders within three years and the lake is on track to do just that. Two local anglers: Adrian Nixon and Hefin Jones caught 8 pike between them weighing between 3 and 10lb all taken on dead sprat bait. These lads are fly fishermen and new to pike fishing congratulations! We will be running a pike week again in November 2007.
Brenig re-opens for fly-fishing on Saturday 17 March 2007 hope you all overwinter well until then.
