Witton Castle Lakes Report 17.6.07
Witton Castle Lakes Report 17.6.07

A lack of understatement , both Rivers Wear and Tees, along with spring tides have been on flood alert with many Seatrout podding up and moving through into the upper reaches.

Incoming fresh fish will be held up in the pools as the river starts to drop back and fine off.

B.A.A.C. anglers have already been out in force, spinning, and other anglers report the water is perfect for fly, running at just 1 foot above summer level. The fly at night will become more prevalent.

Water levels at Witton Castle Lakes have lifted which has freshened everything up which has allowed fly life to flourish, as temperatures increase and fish lock into a feeding pattern.

Buzzers and Olives are in abundance at times, together with the anglers curse.

Some superb doubles have come out again, with Jim Allaker, fishing with his father William on father’s day secured a 19 ¼ lb fish, completing his bag with another 2 2lb,ers on a goldhead Hares Ear.

David Risby and son Sean from Willington had a 17 ½ pounder  and a 2 ½ pounder on a Green Blob.

Alan Place on a traditionally fished Black Buzzer on the swing in the ripple, secured a quality 11 ½ pounder  and a 3 ¾ pounder on the same fly.

Paul Garside, from Billingham took fish of 8 ½ lbs and 2 ½ on a white Zonker with a pearlised  body  .

On a sporting permit,  Tony and Alan Murgatroyd,  returned 8 fish between them from 3lbs, 5lbs and up to 10lbs, with Alan Tait  from Dalton, returning a 20lb + fish on a Goldhead, brown damsel.

Popular flies this week have been Black epoxy buzzer, Diawl bach , Olive nymph, Damsel nymphs, Pheasant tail and and occasional fish on a greased up Hares Ear.

Lures have been white and black Zonkers and the first of the Seatrout of the season weighed in at Witton Castle at 6lbs , fell to Kevin Stuart from Cook,on a Blue flying ‘c’,  from the lower reaches of the River Wear at Pagebank.
