Blackwater Lodge Newsletter - June 30, 2008

A timely Flood hits the Blackwater

On June 27, a good flood hit the Blackwater which took the river height up from 0.47m to 1.65m. Today - (June 30) - it has now dropped back to 0.46m and is fining off well.
As expected, the fishing picked up considerably once the flood subsided. Yesterday - Sunday, June 29 - a total of 6 fish were caught. Calum Barclay's 3 rod party on Lower Kilmurry saw a lot of fish running during the day. They hooked 4 fish and landed 3 weighing 13.1, 6½ & 3½lb.  Pictures are in the June Gallery. All were sparkling silver fish with sea-lice. John Kirkpatrick from Co. Down caught his first ever salmon - a slightly coloured 12 pounder on spinner from Ballincurrig (Beat12) which he sportingly returned alive.
Glenda Powell took a sea-liced grilse on spinner on Kents, and Pakie Carroll had a 7 pounder on Carrig - both returned alive.
Prospects
Today the river is coming into even better order and we are expecting to see fish taken on fly.
The weather will continue broken for the week which will keep the level topped up.
Looks as if the fish are now starting to run in good numbers with both grilse and larger fish being taken, so the prospects of sport in the next weeks should be excellent.
Keep up to date with all the latest news on our Fishing Report page (password required).
Availability
Reasonable for accommodation & fishing at the Lodge in the next couple of weeks.
Beat Access at Kents
For those who know the river, we now have vehicle access right down to the river at Kents (Beat 4) with a fenced off parking area for several cars right next to the hut.
