Thornton Fishing report week ending 22/06/08
Midsummer, longest day June 21 has past & unusually the surface water temperature is ideal for trout fishing at 17 degrees the coolest I can remember for that time of year. Our water clarity is excellent, gin clear, with visibility easily 11ft, therefore on the brighter days the trout have been taken over the deeper water but when it’s overcast the shallows along the Thornton Arm & farm bank has fished well. A variety of methods worked last week from fishing a fast sinker & booby on the back drift to an intermediate & damsels & when it was overcast dry fly size 14 G&H sedge or a size 14 Elk Hair dry worked well fished along the weed beds. During the week 195 rods caught 502 trout returning 234 for a rod average of 2.4 with the morning session generally fishing best. However during the last couple of hours 8.00pm – 10.00pm we are seeing plenty of trout moving but they are not easy to tempt as their feeding on the caenis. When fishing for trout feeding on the caenis taper your leader down to a 4lb or 3lb point fish a small tups or sparkle gnat & fish it static. Tony Lorrimer once again found the trout catching 12 for his visit, S Warner caught 11 to 3lb on damsels, Craig Smith caught 9 to 4lb on dries & buzzers, Peter Broad fished a damsel & caught 10, Norma Prime took time off from the lodge & fished an indicator with buzzers & small hares ear in Green Bay to catch 12 while Lol Worral caught a 5lb4oz and Dave Saunt & Andy Wolloff both caught rainbows weighing 4lb8oz. With the cooler, good water temperature & excellent water clarity we are enjoying a better than expected summer fishing.
