Rutland Water Fly Fishers – Cutting Trophy 6 June
Thirteen anglers turned out for this four hour evening bank match. Despite the appalling weather – torrential rain and icy wind, anglers recorded the best ever result for this annual event with an amazing 4.54 rod average with no nil returns. The average fish weight was 2lb 6oz. Congratulations to Phil Brown who ran out an easy winner with a superb eight fish catch for a total weight of 23lb 4oz taken by the washing line method with various nymphs propped up by a booby. His catch was taken from Stockie Bay and Fantasy Island and included four over wintered Rainbows between 3lb and 4lb and was the heaviest catch taken in the history of the event. Phil also took the prize for the best fish – a Rainbow of 3lb 14oz. The best brown weighed 3lb 3oz and was caught by Andy Wells from Spalding. Fish, which were all caught on floating lines, were taken in various places with Normanton Church to the Dam being the hot stretch. In many places the fish were feeding very close to the bank. Most of the fish were caught on red holographic diawl bach with one or two on crunchers. Paul Wild caught some on emerger patterns. Ziggy Lesiakowski lost his eighth fish when his dropper knot caught in the top ring of his rod and the fish bolted and broke him! At the end of the evening club chairman John Maitland thanked John Wadham for organising the match. “This result clearly reflects this season’s very high quality fishing,” said John Wadham in his match report.

fish week 817 (season 8,417) returns 206 (2,323) rod average 3.66(3.62)
Grafham Water has continued to fish well for both bank and boat anglers with the majority of the fish being caught in the top six feet of the water on either small nymphs or orange or black lures. Bank anglers have had their best results by fishing floating lines with olive or black buzzers with diawl bachs, PTN and crunchers from the north shore - Hill Farm, G bank, Marlow Stones and the Willows area. The best time of the day for the bank anglers has been the late afternoon/evening when the trout are moving very close into the margins. Boat anglers have been enjoying some excellent sport from mainly the eastern end of the reservoir - G,I,D,N and B buoys, fishing sink tip lines with buzzers, diawl bachs, PTN and crunchers or medium sunk lines with boobies and diawl bachs on the washing line.

Pitsford Water
fish week 487 (season 7134) returns 228 (2269) rod average 2.1 (3.1)
Bank sport has been good, especially in the evenings from 8pm onwards. Fish can be seen rising close to the banks as the sun goes down. Fish have been taken on a variety of patterns including hoppers and c.d.c’s. Top spots have been Bog Bay, the Gorse and the Gravels. Boat anglers have also seen lots of fish free rising out in the middle of the main basin and near the dam face. Anglers have been tempting them with dry flies. Fish have been feeding on green midge larva and can be seen slurping through the surface. The trick is to intercept with a dry fly a foot in front! Season ticket holder John Fletcher from Desborough reported a bumper bag of fish taken from the flats near to the overflow on the bung method.
