Paul Kirkup of Kibworth, Leics took the best fish of the week. Paul netted a 7lb 4oz rainbow whilst boat fishing the South Arm.  Another good rainbow was a 6lb fish falling to season ticket holder Graham Bayliss from Earl Shilton, Leics.  Graham caught the fish boat fishing the North Arm on a nymph.

The best brown fell to Oakham season ticket holder Peter De Kremer with a 6lb 1oz specimen taken off the dam wall.  Another season ticket holder Roger Gill from Billingham, Lincolnshire, enthused about the recent sport on the bank, Roger has taken at least ten fish over 4lb in the last four weeks, with dries and nymphs working well.

Dry fly and nymph anglers had the best sport last week with the main basin in particular witnessing plenty of fish on top.  Fish are feeding in very shallow water and close to the bank on a diet of sedge pupae, small buzzer and beetles.

Grafham Water

fish for week 803 (10146) returns 232 (2438) rod average 3.46 (4.16)

The biggest fish of the season so far was caught on Monday 3 June by season ticket holder Bob Wallinger from Leicester.  Bob took a superb conditioned brown trout of 10lb 7oz on a silver tube and di8 line from around K buoy.  Bob said “I’ve been fishing Anglian Water Fisheries since 1966 and its my first double figured trout – it went like a steam train.”  Well done Bob – now it’s your turn to catch a double figured rainbow.  The best rainbow of the week was caught by Julian Davies.  Julian took the 6lb 2oz rainbow from the bowl of the dam on a floating line with a cruncher.  The best bag of the week went to Mark Haycock from Earls Barton.  Mark caught 8 fish for 20lb 14½oz on a sink tip line with crunchers and diawl bachs.

Grafham Water has continued to fish well with plenty of fish being taken in the top five feet of water on lures or nymphs with some anglers catching on dries for both bank and boat anglers.

Boat anglers have had the best of the sport this week with once again the North Shore producing the best catch rates.  Anglers have been catching on a variety of lines from Di7’s to floaters and sink tips, boobies, orange blobs, diawl bachs, crunchers, buzzers and small sparklers.  There has been some arm wrenching sport and some anglers have had some pleasing fishing on dries with claret or ginger hoppers doing the business.

Grafham Water continued

Bank anglers have found the fishing a little more challenging than the boat anglers which is normal for this time of the year, but many have had some excellent sport from mainly the North Shore, Deep Water Point, Pylon Point and Church Bay.  Floating or intermediate lines with diawl bachs, crunchers, buzzers and cormorants have been the most productive methods with Deep Water Point being the best bank spot on the reservoir with plenty of trout in close to the margins.

fish for week 306 (7885) returns 171 (2643) rod average 1.8 (3.0)

Stevie Clark of Bonnyrigg Scotland has enjoyed the best holiday any angler could wish for. He boat fished on Wednesday to bag a 10lb 8oz Rainbow. He used a cruncher and a midge tip line, in North farm bay. The fish was in fine condition. He also returned a further 8 fish that day.  Stevie later returned on Friday to bag the season’s best brown trout a fine fish of 7lb 8oz. The fish was returned, and was caught close to the mouth of Pitsford Creek.  He used a claret diawl bach ,and slow glass line.  Stevie was part of the Brown holiday package, with 4 anglers from Dumfries and 4 from Edinburgh. They caught 129 fish over three days, which gave a rod average of 5.3. Nathan Clayton senior warden said “When I met this group of holiday package anglers, I assured them they would have a great time, as the lake was fishing well, and said that it is nice to see the Scottish anglers catching more than the locals!”
