Rutland Water
fish for week 1495(16805) returns 467 (4512) rod average 3.2(3.72)
In a week when Rutland Water celebrated its 30th anniversary John Seaton, senior warden, met two Devon anglers who have fished Rutland every year for the past 30 years. John Glanfield (75) and Richard Powlesland (62), recalled many happy hours fishing Rutland’s banks. They remembered the very first morning in 1977 when they arrived at Whitwell Creek. It was still dark with the moon quite high in the sky when a van, containing a TV crew, drew alongside. That night when the pair phoned home their wives already knew they had enjoyed a good day’s fishing – they were featured on national T.V. Over the years they have caught fish in almost all areas – the fish seem to get bigger. Their favourite method is floating lines and buzzers.
Rutland Water continues to attract anglers from far and wide. Amongst the best returns for the week was Eric Glaister and his party of five from Carlisle, Cumbria. During their 3 day boat package this group caught 112 rainbows averaging between 2½-3lb. Most of these fish were caught in the Hideaway Bay area on buzzers.

Grafham Water
fish for week 652 (9343) returns 207 (2206) rod average 3.14 (4.23)
Jim Connell of Manchester caught the biggest fish of the week. Jim caught a cracking over wintered Rainbow of 6lb 5oz on a slime line with a diawl bach from Hedge End. The biggest bag of the week was taken by local angler Ian Heading. Ian, from Great Staughton, had an 8 fish bag for 30lb 2oz. He caught this tremendous limit on a di7 line with a silver and pearl tube fly in the middle of the reservoir.
Grafham has fished well this week with the majority of the trout being taken on boobies or small nymphs on slime lines at the Bowl of the Dam. Bank anglers have found the fishing challenging this week as the trout seem to be moving into the deeper water as the weather has warmed considerably and has got a lot brighter. However, anglers have had some success generally by fishing early morning or late e

fish for week 274 (7579) returns 116 (2472) rod average 2.3 (3.0)
Pitsford regular Colin Johnson of Northampton, landed a superb Rainbow of 7lb 11oz. Colin fished from a boat using intermediate line and a blob in the Sailing Club area of the reservoir. John Fletcher of Desborough, Kettering, caught the biggest brown of the week. This 6lb 2oz fish fought hard and fell to a small buzzer on a floating line in the Sailing Club Bay.
Lots of other good fish have been reported between the 4lb and 6lb bracket mostly from the Sailing Club area and off the bank at the Gravels. Best methods are static nymphs or dries on a floating line. Boat anglers have had some good sport in the small half. Floating lines with damsels or dries, the dries seem to work either early or late in the day.
The first Boat Buddies event was held last Tuesday at Pitsford. Three experienced anglers gave up their evening to show three new starter anglers the skills that they have learned themselves. With perfect conditions they all fished the small half and managed a fish or two! Malcolm Williamson, new starter, thought it was a great idea and said that he had learned more in these three hours than in two seasons!

The pike anglers must have had one of the best opening months at the reservoir in recent times, and there is currently no sign of it slowing up. Colin Smith and his son fished two very hectic boat sessions landing 18 fish over the two days. Best fish on the first day pulled the scales down to 17lb, and on the second visit Colin had seven doubles to 14lb. Other successful anglers include Tim Parker who had 8 fish during one boat session, all were double figure fish and Colin Easter had six to 14lb.
On the main reservoir Jason Butterfield had a superb 29lb ghost common and Mark Chapman had a nice 14lb mirror from the western arm. Ian Symington had 10 skimmer bream and 3 bigger fish.
The Wick Lane lake continues to produce excellent mixed bags and promises to remain clear of weed. Noel Woods had 8 bream to 6lb plus an 8lb tench. Nigel Mills had a good mixed bag of roach, rudd and perch and Lee Cowan also had several bream best of which was over vening at the Seat, Stumps, Deep Water Point and bowl of the dam, mainly on buzzers, diawl bachs and crunchers on intermediate or midge tip lines. The boat anglers have had the best of the sport with plenty of anglers catching good bags of fish generally by fishing the deeper areas of the reservoir, bowl of dam , central drifts, G, T and D buoys. The anglers are generally catching on diawl bachs, buzzers, crunchers, boobies and cormorants on a variety of lines from floaters to di7’s.
