Lessons to be learnt from the best of British salmon rivers.
This March a group of 20 Norwegian fishery owners from the Namsen river valley will spend five days on a fact-finding visit to the north east of England. They are keen to understand how Tweed maintains its position as the best salmon river in the UK and why the Tyne has improved so dramatically in the last thirty years and is now the best salmon river in England by some margin.
The party will see the important work of the Tweed Foundation and visit the Environment Agency’s Tyne fish-monitoring station and Kielder hatchery. They will also visit a number of top fishing beats on both rivers and meet fishers across both systems. The trip has been organised in collaboration with the Norwegian Tourist & Economic Development authorities who recognise that lessons can be learnt from conservation measures and fishery management techniques here in the UK.
The trip is being hosted in the UK by Harald Oyen of Fish Norway and NE fishing correspondent Colin Bradshaw.
