Fishing The Kanektok River

During 2008 I shall be taking a party to fish in Alaska, this will be my forth visit to this river & am able to offer advice on the trip. I have two places left.

The dates July 8th – July 18th 2008

We will fly into Anchorage on the 8th July have two nights in the city, gives you an opportunity to purchase your fishing license $55 & do some sightseeing. On the morning of the 10th we take the first flight out from Anchorage to Dillingham where we will catch the float plane that takes us to Tagati Lake the headwater of the Kanektok river.

We aim to arrive at the lake where the guides will have set up camp sometime after mid day. There will be ample opportunity on the first day to fish for the lake trout, rainbows & grayling with the grayling fishing at its superb best at this camp. You will also see plenty of sockeye salmon although this high up the river they can be difficult to tempt.

On the morning of the 11th two anglers will be allocated a guide & a boat for the day & will drift down the river fishing from the boat, as & when the opportunity arises especially on the lower river your guides will pull over & some fishing during the day will be done from the bank.

The first 2 days of fishing is excellent grayling, & rainbow trout water with more & more salmon available every day the further we drift down the river. The last two days in particular is excellent King salmon water with king salmon averaging 15lb – 25lb with fish taken each year up to 50lb. During the week we will fish for Grayling, Rainbows, Char, Pink Salmon, Chum Salmon, Sockeye Salmon & King Salmon

The Guides aim to be on the water every day from 9.00am with them aiming to be at the next camp site by 5.30pm.

During July we will have around 21 hours of daylight, the camp site is chosen each evening to allow you to continue fishing from the bank for as long as you stay awake.

During the week we will drift the entire length of the river, 90 miles, finishing our trip at Quinhagak on the 16th where we catch a plane to Bethel & from there back to Anchorage. On the17th we catch a flight back to the UK arriving back on the 18th

The guides will provide a hot meal every night 7.30pm with breakfast prepared by the guides available from 7.30am; a cold lunch is provided at 1.00pm every day & again is all provided & prepared by the guides. The guides will erect & dismantle the camp each day, all you have to do is fish & enjoy yourselves.

The cost will be around £3500 which includes flights, hotels in Anchorage, internal flights, tips for the guides & spending money.

Visit the guides web site http://www.alaskaflyfishingcamps.com/

A deposit of £500 secures your spot with another £500 due November & the balance of around £1000 due late May.

The flights & hotels I book through a travel agent with a deposit of around £200 due at the time of booking with the agent, the flight balance usually due late April. I look to fly the cheapest route.
