Support the Drift Net Ban
Support the Drift Net Ban
The report of the Independent Salmon Group established to examine The Implications of Alignment with the Scientific Advice for the Commercial Salmon Fishing sector in 2007 and Beyond has now been published and will be considered by the Irish Cabinet in the next week. This excellent report supports fully the ban on drift netting. Details can be found via the News Page on our website or the Stop Now site. What it means for us and you Full implementation of the report will mean a giant leap forward for the Irish salmon resource in terms of conservation and numbers of fish returning to our rivers. With many thousands more salmon returning to our rivers, our sport and the spawning stocks will improve dramatically. But we need your help! Needless to say, the plan is meeting concerted opposition and intensive counter-lobbying from the commercial fishing sector. The Minister may be isolated in his desire to implement the ban unless he gets support from all over the country and internationally. Please send him an immediate email in support of the ban. His email addresses are: minister.dempsey@dcmnr.gov.ie _noel.dempsey@oireachtas.ie _info@noeldempsey.ie Preferably short, sharp and in your own words. Please say that you support the ban on driftnets. A huge amount of effort has gone to get us this far down the line. We must not be complacent at this late stage. A little effort from everyone will help to push us to success - Irish coastal waters free of the deadly drift nets and our rivers (and indeed those of Wales, England, France and Spain) with an abundant stock of salmon.
