Rutland Water's Opening Day
Rutland Water's Opening Day

Rutland Water's opening day got off to a great start with plenty of bag limits from both the banks and the boats. An east North East wind took the edge off the temperatures, however it didn't seem to bother the fish.

UK Flyfishers Craig Barr was the first person to leave the boat dock for the new season. Craig and his boat partner, team member Tom Davies, headed for Fantasy island.

Both returned to the boat dock with their bag limits by 1.00pm. Craig had a cracking over wintered rainbow weighing 4lb 6oz and is waiting confirmation from Anglian Water to see if it was the biggest fish of the day to win the Independence day trophy and prize money!

ACA'S Robert Edmunds and Lee Henthry took a double bag limit each. They fished anchored with Di-7 lines off the front of the lodge using booby patterns.

The best boat areas were the Old hall flats, Fantasy Island, the Lodge Frontage, The Mound(Barnsdale), Church Bay,Normanton bank, Sykes Lane and Yellow Stones. Best patterns- Balck & Green gold heads, Boobies, Orange Blobs,Cormarants, Cats Whiskers, Orange Goldheads and Black Blobs.

Bank anglers were there at the crack of dawn. Sykes lane was lined with anglers. Some braved the head on winds on the Normanton shores. This paid dividends as the fish were close into the shore lines. Black and green tadpoles were a popular choice, as were buzzers, taking plenty of fish.

England Youth James Hunt fished the bank at Stockie Bay. James was using a floating line and a black and green tadpole, taking 5 fish upto 3lb by 1.00pm. England Youth team coach Iain Barr, ventured up the South Arm in search of a big fish with boat partner Mark Rooney. Iain arrived back at the boat dock the same time as twin brother Craig. Iain said " It wasnt really that great up there. There were fish on the Old Hall flats and the golf course. That big fish lives to fight another day."

The best bank spots were, Stockie Bay, Yellowstone, The dam,The Mound, Whitwell frontage, The Monument(sykes lane) and the Normanton shore by the Church. Best patterns were, Black & Green tadpoles, buzzers, cats whiskers, gold head lures.

The fish were in Mint condition, and fought very hard. All looks good for an excellent season ahead.
