Independence Day Trophy for the best fish
This year sees the 30th anniversary of the opening of Rutland Water and everything points to it being one of its best seasons yet. Anglers’ catch rates and last year’s fish size were better than ever and indicate great early season sport with over wintered fish. Readers of Today’s Flyfisher magazine voted Rutland Water their favourite large Stillwater in 2006 and we want to make it even better. “Our stocking programme aims to give consistent results through the year,” says Senior Warden John Seaton.
Lots of work goes on behind the scenes preparing for the new fishing season. The Litter Pick at Rutland has become an annual event, benefiting not only the fishery but charity as well. Organised by Rutland Water Fly Fishers, this year’s litter pick was on the first Sunday in March. Fourteen members and spouses turned out on a rather damp Sunday morning. Before setting off the team was fortified by delicious bacon baps and coffee and equipped with gloves and bin bags (all provided by Anglian Water). Fourteen magnum bin liners of litter were collected plus a marker buoy!
Thanks go to club members and supporters of The Rutland Water Fly Fishers for turning out on such a rotten day. Anglian Water sponsors the event and the proceeds from the Litter Pick will be donated to the Rutland Memorial Hospital at a presentation later in the year.
