UK Flyfishers Craig Barr was sent on a dawn raid to Nothamptonshires Elinor Trout fisheries opening day, Saturday 24th February.
Craig arrived at Elinor in the pitch black, and much to his amazement, there were 12 cars already in the car park by 6.00am, with not an angler in site!
Fishery owner, Ed Foster had predicted a good turn out. He told UK Flyfisher before opening. " With The current mild weather, and the light winds forecast, I expect it will be a busy day."
Craig started fishing with a floating line and a black and green goldhed lure, and it wasnt long until he was into a fish - his 4th cast to be precise! Local angler Brad Gifford was catching fish consistently using a slime lime and two orange coloured blobs, using the roly poly retrieve.
Fish were getting caught all around the lake, with the points along the hole West arm proving to be the early season hot spots. The dam end of the lake proved slower than expected, but local expert Robert Edmunds managed 5 fish before 9.00am using a sinking line and lures.
The boat anglers got off to a slow start, as the majority of fish were caught in the margins early on. Fish could be seen moving towards the middle of the lake, as the bank pressure pushed the fish out into slightly deeper water. Sinking lines with goldhead lures worked well off the boats in the afternoon. As things settled, plenty of fish were taken on nymphs from the banks, with the biggest weighing in at a cracking11lb 8oz.
Ed told UK Flyfisher " It has been a cracking start to the new season. Everyone around the whole lake appears to be getting a piece of the action. We have had 112 anglers here today, our best ever start to a season !
